One of my first jobs was teaching people how to fly airplanes. My students came from all walks of life, and in various stages of their life. Lionel, a janitor retiring from a nearby school, came to learn from me as the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to fly. I taught Lionel to fly and he taught me that it is never too late to achieve the dreams we have for ourselves. I practice psychotherapy in a similar way; my clients teach me about themselves, and I try to help them develop insights that may lead to more satisfying and contented lives.
In couples or relationship therapy, my goal is not to “save” relationships; instead, my work is focused on helping people understand the principles of sound, healthy and mutually fulfilling relationships.
The work of psychotherapy requires a trusting relationship that can sustain the warmth of connection as well as the heat that may be required for change.
